Night of the Asteroids

by John Garmon

They were from up there
Orbiting in their belt
Between Jupiter and Mars
Millions of them
But only a few fell
And they were tiny
Not like the big asteroids
Not like the one
That killed the dinosaurs
And almost everything else
I want to tell you
It was okay
I would give your secret away
The one about looking
Every night for asteroids
Maybe one that broke loose
And was heading to earth
The thrill of the catastrophe
Held in my mind
You said I was misinformed
I was no astronomer
No astronaut
I would be able to tell
As asteroid from a meteor
Or a comet or space junk
But I laughed trying
To make you think
I knew you were kidding
Although you weren’t
And we left it that way
And we haven’t spoken
Since then
But the asteroids
Are still up there in
Their asteroid belt
Waiting for humans
To find a way to
Start mining
Their precious metals
